The report, released on the 25th June 2020, includes figures up until November 2019 concerning recruitment and retention figures for teachers and teaching assistants. Highlighted facts are:
- 2018 to 2019 saw an increase of 400 teachers and 1000 teaching assistants.
- 43,406 full time individuals entered teaching (a decrease of 3.3% compared to 2018 figures) and 39,675 full time equivalent left (a decrease of 3.8%).
- pupil teacher ratio in 2019 compared to 2018: early years and primary remained the same at 20.9. Special schools saw an increase to 5.9 from 5.8. Secondary schools PTR increased by 0.3 to 16.6 (2018 16.3.)
- more teachers decreased their working hours (5.3%) than increased them (3.7%). (this is equivalent to a decrease of 3,200 full time teachers).
- Of the NQTs who qualified in 2018, 85.4% are still in service one year after qualification, compared to 85.1% in 2018. This is the first increase since 2011.
- 4% of teachers who qualified in 2014, are still in service after 5 years. This is lower than the five-year retention rate seen in the previous year, when the figure was 68.0%.
