No quick fix to attainment gap

School leaders are challenging the idea that a summer catch-up can make up for pupils’ absence from school under lockdown.

Gavin Williamson, education secretary, is to announce plans this week for a ‘huge amount’ of summer catch-up but the NAHT school leaders’ union warns there is “no quick fix” to the lost time school children have experienced during the lockdown period. Instead the general feeling is that there needs to be more done to address it; “a sustainable, long-term plan” that draws on the teachers’ knowledge is what General secretary Paul Whiteman has stated.
