SEND Teaching Assistant – Barnsley

Provide Education are working with a special school in Barnsley who are seeking a Teaching Assistant this term.

The successful candidate will join an inspiring learning environment which caters for young people aged 2-19 with a wide range of Special Educational Needs which include:

  • Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC)
  • Moderate and Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD/SLD)
  • Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
  • Physical Disabilities (PD)
  • Sensory Processing needs

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work with pupils with SEND to develop communication and language, good social interaction and conduct skills, good basic education skills – literacy, numeracy and ICT, and good life skills and employability skills.

Key duties will include:

  • Establishing good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs
  • Attending to pupils’ personal needs including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters
  • Supervising and supporting pupils, ensuring their safety and access to learning
  • Supporting pupils to access learning activities as directed by the teacher and in line with their individual learning plans or targets
  • Attending relevant meetings and training as required
  • Assisting with the supervision of pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required
  • Supervising pupils at lunch and break times

Working under the guidance of a senior staff, Teaching Assistants play an important role in supporting the academic and personal development of children both in and out of the classroom. This role can include getting the classroom ready for lessons, listening to children read, helping children who need extra support, helping teachers to plan learning activities and complete records, supporting teachers in managing class behaviour, supervising group activities and looking after children who are upset or have had accidents.

We are seeking Teaching Assistants with:

  • Experience of working in an education or health care setting – ideally with individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • GCSE English/Maths/ grade A to C or equivalent
  • Specific training in relevant learning strategies/interventions such as PECS, Makaton, Team Teach or Moving & Handling
  • The ability to deliver pre-planned programmes of work to children using personalised strategies to support reluctant learners to engage and achieve learning goals/objectives
  • The ability to respond calmly and use initiative, responding effectively to unexpected or unplanned situations or reactions throughout the school day
