Job Title: SEN Teaching Assistant

Location: Barnsley, S71

Job Type: Full-time

Role Overview: As a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the learning and development of students with special educational needs or disabilities. Working under the guidance of the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) and classroom teachers, you will provide tailored assistance to ensure that students with SEN can fully access the curriculum and reach their potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Individualized Support:
    • Work one-on-one or in small groups with students with SEN, providing personalized support and assistance according to their individual education plans (IEPs) or education, health, and care plans (EHCPs).
    • Adapt teaching materials and resources to meet the specific needs and learning styles of students with SEN, including those with cognitive, physical, sensory, or behavioural challenges.
  2. Classroom Inclusion:
    • Promote an inclusive classroom environment where students with SEN feel welcomed, valued, and supported.
    • Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement strategies for differentiation and accommodations to ensure that students with SEN can fully participate in classroom activities and lessons.
  3. Behavioural Support:
    • Implement behaviour management strategies and techniques to support students with SEN in managing their emotions, behaviour, and social interactions.
    • Provide positive reinforcement, praise, and encouragement to promote self-esteem and confidence in students with SEN.
  4. Personal Care:
    • Assist students with personal care tasks, if required, such as toileting, feeding, and mobility support, in accordance with their individual needs and care plans.
  5. Communication and Collaboration:
    • Communicate effectively with classroom teachers, SENCO, parents or guardians, and other relevant professionals to share information about student progress, challenges, and strategies for support.
    • Attend and actively participate in meetings, including SEN reviews, parent-teacher conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings, as appropriate.
  6. Resource Management:
    • Organize and maintain SEN resources, equipment, and assistive technology devices to ensure they are accessible and readily available for student use.
    • Support students in using assistive technology and adaptive aids to facilitate their learning and independence.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Relevant experience working with children or young people with special educational needs or disabilities.
  2. A relevant qualification in education, childcare, or special educational needs support is desirable but not essential.
  3. Strong understanding of different types of special educational needs and disabilities, as well as strategies for supporting students with diverse needs.
  4. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  5. Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude towards supporting the learning and development of students with SEN.
  6. Ability to remain calm, flexible, and adaptable in challenging situations.

Additional Requirements:

  • Completion of background checks, including a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Willingness to undergo relevant training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge in supporting students with SEN.
