Provide Education are seeking a Teaching Assistant for a Behaviour Support role in an alternative provision in Barnsley. This role will commence once schools return (expected February 2021).

The successful candidate must hold a valid Team Teach certificate, or be able to refresh this training before commencing the role. You will be working with pupils between 8 and 16 years old with a wide range of Special Educational Needs, including challenging behaviour. You will be able to build a rapport with young people and establish values based on mutual respect, trust and understanding.

The school benefits from state of the art facilities, a supportive Senior Leadership Team and a reputable approach to behaviour management – gaining an Outstanding inspection from Ofsted in 2020. There are currently 108 pupils on roll, and you will be joining an established and experienced team of Learning Support Assistants and specialist teachers.

Pupils will be returning to school after a significant amount of time without accessing formal education, so a large part of your role will be to support pupils as they transition into school throughout the Summer term. Pupils may struggle to engage with learning activities, may show signs of distress and may display challenging behaviours, including verbal and physical aggression. You will work closely with class teachers to implement very specific and structured plans, leading activities designed to support their return to school.

As a Teaching Assistant you will:

  • Support pupils to access learning activities – and provide structured support to re-engage and encourage pupils to participate in learning
  • Provide targeted behaviour intervention
  • Liaise with a multi-disciplinary team, including teachers, medical staff, and therapists – working collaboratively with a holistic approach to children’s education
  • Communicate effectively with parents to adopt an effective home/school link
  • Have knowledge and understanding of aggression and conflict, being able to recognise typical signs and causes. Have knowledge and understanding of the importance of using de-escalation strategies where possible
  • Have knowledge and understanding of a whole setting holistic approach to behaviour management, including the importance of self-awareness and self-control whilst managing challenging behaviour
  • Be able to conduct a follow up process with the service users and is aware of the importance of a support and supervision, repair and reflection process for both staff and individuals involved following a serious incident involving positive handling strategies

Applications will be considered from experienced Teaching Assistants, and from those with a background in supporting young people (or adults) with Special Educational Needs in an education or health care setting.
